Have you noticed that more dogs are wearing boots this summer? Everywhere I go I see canines of all sizes wearing some type of bootie or sneaker to protect their paws from the hot summer pavement. I don’t know how the trend got started, but I have to say that I like it!

Just the other day a sweet dog and his owner walked into a dog supply store as I was leaving. The pup was wearing adorable blue sneakers on each paw, but he wasn’t happy about it. The poor guy was taking big, exaggerated steps as he got used to walking in the shoes. He had no idea how they were keeping him safe from the heat.

The scene reminded me of the first time I tried to get my dog Sophie to wear boots. Sophie’s hind legs were paralyzed due to a disease called Degenerative Myelopathy, an ailment that slowly attacks a dog’s spine and central nervous system.
No matter how hard I tried to entice Sophie to wear the boots, she didn’t want to have anything to do with them. She even ripped a pair off with her teeth.
I kept working with Sophie because I knew that booties and dog shoes weren’t a luxury for dogs with mobility problems, they are a necessity. That’s because dogs with paralysis can’t feel any sensations in their paws. They don’t realize when they’re getting burned by a hot sidewalk or street.
Thankfully a pair of soft red doggie boots was a game-changer. Sophie loved them and wore them whenever we went outside.

How hot can the pavement get?
Sidewalks and streets made from concrete, asphalt, brick, stone and even artificial turf can reach temperatures of 100°F degrees and more.
That’s hot enough to cause severe burns, blistering, and lasting damage to the pads on your dog’s paws. Dog boots act as a protective barrier, insulating their paws from the heat and allowing them to enjoy the outdoors without the risk of injury.
Beyond the heat, boots also offer protection from other summer hazards. Think about the many dangers on sidewalks and trails: sharp rocks, broken glass, thorns, and even irritating pesticides.
Dog boots and sneakers provide a shield that prevents cuts, punctures, and exposure to harmful substances.
How to choose the right dog boot
It’s important to find the best dog boot for your pet’s needs. Here are important features to look for:
- Choose the right size boot for your dog. A shoe that’s too big or too small can spell trouble. Follow the guidelines on the manufacturer’s website or packaging so that you pick the best size possible.
- Buy dog shoes that are made from quality materials. They’ll last longer and keep your pet’s paws cool, protected and comfortable.
- Be sure the boot allows air to circulate well.
Specialized boots for dogs with mobility problems
Dog boots for disabled pups often feature reinforced toes and soles and are made from durable materials that provide added protection. It’s also important for the boot to have good traction. For dogs with limited or no feeling in their paws, maintaining their grip can be a challenge, especially on smooth surfaces like tile or hardwood floors. Boots with non-slip soles can help your pet maintain their balance and prevent slips and falls.
